How To Cut Iceberg Lettuce

Learn how to wedge, chop, and shred a head of iceberg lettuce.


Ingredients

  • 1 head of iceberg lettuce

Instructions

For Iceberg Wedges

  1. Peel and discard any outer brown or wilted leaves.
  2. Wash and pat dry.
  3. Cut the head of lettuce in half.
  4. Cut each of those halves again to create quarters with cores intact. 
  5. Begin with your knife parallel to the cutting board, then turn it to a 45-degree angle to slice off the core of each quarter to create wedges. 

For Chopped Iceberg

  1. Remove and discard outer brown or wilted leaves.
  2. Wash and dry the head of lettuce.
  3. Remove the core.
  4. Slice the head in half.
  5. Cut ¾-inch strips lengthwise into each half.
  6. Rotate the strips 90 degrees and create slices ¾ apart.

For Shredded Iceberg

  1. Remove and discard outer brown or wilted leaves.
  2. Wash and dry the head of lettuce.
  3. Remove the core.
  4. Slice the head in half.
  5. Cut ¼-inch slivers throughout the entire half.
  6. Repeat on the other half head of lettuce.
